Katie and James are one of my newer Bump-to-Babe clients and we’ve had SO much fun with all their sessions.   I can’t encourage all of you out there enough to trust your professional to do their job and they will surprise you!  (And this applies to most tradespeople and professionals.)   Putting restrictions on & trying to control creative professionals will stifle them and bore you with the results.   So do yourself a favour and collaborate with your creative professional–you’ll be so happy with the products–I promise!

Anyway–all that to say, Katie and James encouraged me to do my thang and also brought a lot of great concepts forward and together we’ve brought them to life!    You should check out their very popular maternity session here.  It was so well-received that it was featured on a couple different baby blogs in Canada and the US!

Little Brighton came pretty early–about 3 weeks–so things were a little bumpy for the first week or so, but by the time we shot this lovely newborn session at Katie & James’ house she was doing awesome and was SUCH a great little model!

After some family pics and pics with Mom and Dad we got her to sleep and she stayed asleep–it was awesome!    She was so cooperative to get posed and moved around and have things put on her head and moved around–she was totally conked out!

The day before this session I’d been doing some reading on newborn photography and in that article the author mentioned that babies almost always smile during newborn sessions, but you just need to be ready for it.   In retrospect of all the newborn sessions I’ve done I realized she was RIGHT!   I just wasn’t ever expecting it–when I should be.  So once we got Brighton in this position we waited….and waited…and before long we got a sweet little smile.   But not before an awesome frown.   That girl can frown!

If you remember the maternity session you’ll remember the above little birch-bark crown I had made—we included it in the shots in the bookstore and outside on the bed.      And if you’ll also recall, we did a number of shots in the bookstore–a special pastime for Katie & James.   So to finish we hung out in Brighton’s room reading books and snuggling.   (I say ‘we’ but I didn’t snuggle.  Although that would have been nice…)     Finally, please note the pic of their cat–this guy….just blows me away.  I’m not a ‘cat-person’ per se, but, wow.   Right?

Ezra, the Little Scholar :: Hamilton Newborn Photographer

I’ve known this little man since he was just a grapefruit in the womb, feeling for his limbs and poking around for his head versus his butt–and even though he was a tiny bit of a surprise he certainly was meant to be here now.   His mama and I (and the entire contents of each of our families) have been family/friends for about 30 years now–so I’m often working with one or two or all 6 of them.   You can see their glowing family/maternity session at an abandoned Hamilton estate here!

Ezra did such a great job at sleeping during this in-studio session–babies always struggle a bit being in a new place with strange smells and sounds.    Maybe it was the lack of big brother x 2 and big sister that allowed this sleepy session…?

Seeing as this family is LIKE family to me, they get the benefit/awkwardness of me trying out new things during their sessions.  This time I tried a really bold striped pattern for some of the shots–what do you think?  Distracting or kinda cool?

Details, details!  Gotta love keeping record of all the littlest details that come and go so quickly at this age…

For the last part of the session we played around with some meaningful books and props to come up with these shots below.  Ezra was a little camera-shy at first…

Don’t you just hate it when you fall asleep while reading and you can’t manage take your glasses off until you roll over and *crunch*…your glasses mash into your face…?   Poor Ezra.

Congratulations, Gill & Ryan on the birth of your very timely little scholar!   For such a time as this.

Baby Benjamin :: Hamilton & Toronto Newborn & Family Photographer

I was so happy to receive a phone call and email from the Parsons who had had a third baby in the time since I photographed their 2nd newborn–Claire.   This time it was a little boy, Benjamin!

We wanted to recreated a few classic shots and then the rest of the time we focused on candid shots in and out of the house.

The eldest, Noah, had turned into quite the little scholar since I’d seen him last, asking lots of smart questions and using really big words–big words for a big brother twice over, I suppose.

With the help of Christine and dear Monkey we got the kids smiling pretty quickly–good ol’ Monkey.  Oh, and Christina too… :)

Just the boys together…

Noah is such a tender, protective big brother!   By the way, none of these photos were specifically ‘posed’.  Noah’s just like that…cutie.

And of course, with my luck, the little baby who apparently can sleep through anything wouldn’t really sleep much for me.   Classic.   Oh well, I can work with anything–and we got some really lovely waking close-ups and some sleeping smiles shots!   Ben’s a smiley little man.

Just the girls…who are outnumbered now!  Uh oh!   Although with smiles like that I can’t see them ever being overlooked.

While we were shooting in the bedroom Christina was with the kiddies in the backyard.  After an unfortunate tumbling accident–some clothes had to be changed and a little boo cleaned up, but everyone was all smiles once again as we shot some more family shots on the back deck.

While we finished up with Ben, the kids happily played in the backyard–and with the sun at just the right angle, I couldn’t resist a few backlit shots around the yard.

Congratulations on the safe arrival of Benjamin, you guys!   Hopefully see you for #4?   No pressure….but you make cute kids.

Baby Harper:: Hamilton Newborn Photographer

Through my dear old doula friend Shannon at Birth on Earth I was happily connected with Sarah & Matt and their young, energetic family of three little girls.    I’ve had a lot of newborn boys through my doors lately, so I was really looking forward to doing some girly stuff with baby Harper.

I know Sarah might feel otherwise, but the girls were so well-behaved and had a lot of fun hamming it up and playing around for the camera.    I’ve worked with a lot of small children and it was fun to be around a bunch of little girls who just wanted to twirl :)

Harper was a little doll–figuratively and literally.  Once she settled, which was really quickly!, she slept easily through the rest of the shoot and allowed us to create a few different shots.  My favourite shot was one I had been saving for a little girl–and it was the Princess and the Pea shot–pictured above.   For all you beginner newborn photographers–please note: this is photoshopped!  Babies should never be put into situations where one false move or accident could harm them!

For this image I started with Harper just on the one mattress on the bed, then after the shoot I set up the bed with all the other mattresses and the gigantic ‘pea’ and then put the two images together.  Takes some of the magic away, I know, but it’s important that people know I’d never put a baby on top of 9 wobbly mattresses.  And neither should you.

Anyway!  It was a joy working with Harper and her adults and I hope the playfulness and tenderness in this family will shine through their photos.

Baby Sarah :: Hamilton Infant Photography

Oh Sarah—I finally got to meet this delightful little suitcase-dweller after way too many months of NOT meeting her.   I can’t say that Sarah is directly related to me, as nice as that would be, but her aunt is my sister.  So…therefore I claim familial rights to her cuteness!

I’ve known her mother, Jenn, for about 25 years now and count her among one of my ‘sisters’–so it was un petite pue torturous when I had to wait all these months to even meet Sarah–since Jenn and her family live up North.  Like, waaaaay up North.  Not cottage country North, not even Sudbury North…in fact, when you hit Sudbury, you’re half way.  Yes, I mean North.

Anyway, I hope you grasp that they live North.   And I hadn’t met Sarah yet because every time Jenn would come to visit I’d be away, or shooting a wedding somewhere out of town or something.  GAH!  The agony!    But all was made well once I got to see them all and have this really fun shoot!  Sarah is at that perfect age that’s AMAZING for photos–she isn’t mobile yet, but she can mostly sit up on her own, she’s responsive to her name and can be made to laugh and smile.  So, it’s great for me!

We even got to spend some time together, Sarah & I, after the shoot, just hanging out on the shag rug in the studio.   I love these shots from her shoot, but probably my favourite time with Sarah was making her really, really laugh as I tickled her and pretended to eat her curious fingers that kept finding their way into my mouth.  Nom, nom, nom…   Ah, my job.  It’s OK.

Also–you can check out Jenn’s maternity shots here!

Baby Connor :: Hamilton Newborn Photography

Baby Connor was such a sweet little lamb during his lengthy shoot.  With his adorable ‘do, props brought by mom, and lots of fun outfits to choose from we ended up having a great time posing, propping and tip-toeing around this sleepy angel!

Congratulations Lisa & Mark!

Baby Sloane: Hamilton Baby Photography

I guess it would have been seven months ago when I first met Steph–ripe with a 10 lb baby and ready for her maternity photos.  We shot in studio on King William in Hamilton and had a lot of fun playing around with different poses, ideas and lighting.

And now, seven months later I got to meet little Sloane!  First off, how about that name?  Incredible.  And secondly, how about that squishy little tush?  I love being able to reconnect with my clients as the journey along in life.

Thanks for letting me in and congrats Sparhams!
